An armature is a structure that provides a foundation for the final layer of clay, wax or plaster. Historically, armatures were made of wood, chicken wire, and many pounds of clay, making them very heavy and unwieldy. Digitally enlarged armatures are typically made of lightweight foam and are much more accurate, requiring much less time and very little clay for the artist to achieve the final surface.
